Give me a book and some music and I’ll be happy on my own – Rouben
One of the first artists that I was able to meet and discover and also one of the last artists (living in London at the moment) that I’ll be introducing to all of you loyal readers and listeners…For the time being.
His name is Rouben Alaverdian (or just Roubs, as his friends tend to call him)
Often seen at the Jam Tart Open Mic Night at the Floripa bar in London, which offers a great variety of various musical styles & genres, this young man whose passion is music/writing, as well as photography and film, enjoys performing a blend of spoken word and rap.
His universe is kind of deep and mellow, mixed with the influences of the greatest musicians such as B.B. King, Bill Withers, Bob Marley, Billie Holiday, Gil Scott Heron, Mos Def, Lauryn Hill… you name it.
Ever since I first saw him perform, I still remember the main statement from one of his songs (which became a melodious chorus):
“Give me a book and some music and I’ll be happy on my own”.
Here is another one of his written pieces, so you can get more of an idea of what his lyrics and material are about:
The Misfits
An inner spirit hides beneath these sheets of insecurities
The real image blocked within the layers of these fears That were built up right from birth The real essence has been hurt…
Hidden by exterior facades So what you see is simply a mirage A tainted vision of a kindred spirit…
But the deeper core is something more… Hidden from the public view Aside from a chosen few…
Who also shine a light inside this darkness and abyss In which most have lost their sight… Aside from the misfits…who might just fix this
And help us to regain our vision…
