Louise Golbey back on her masterpiece: the Renaissance album
The editorial has been supporting Louise Golbey since day one. We can recall her very first songs:
“Sparkle is one of the first songs I ever wrote and I don’t think I have ever done a gig where I haven’t sung this song! It always goes down well with a crowd – and people often come up to me and say it is a very romantic and positive song
Louise Golbey, on her debut album Novel
Seven years later, in 2022, she’s back again with a second body of work, entitled Renaissance. This record may stand as her most challenging and complete record. Collaborating with songwriters from different horizons, inviting prestigious musicians, all according to a consistent artistry.
If you want to connect with Louise on a personal level, listening and appreciating every piece of these 12 tracks is the best way. You’ll get the incorrigeably sentimental singer, the overthinking songwriter, the nostalgic storyteller, and the active dancing machine that she is.
Renaissance showcases Louise’s strongest and most personal recordings to date.
Beautifully crafted & perfectly formed.
A 12 track album made up of a gorgeous blend of harmony filled Acoustic Soul and fresh R’n’B, collaboratively written and recorded by Louise and her team of talented producers & musicians including Gareth Ashton (Metropolis), James Chappell & Eames at The Coconut Lodge Studios, London.
The album kicks off with its title track ‘Renaissance’ (produced by Linden Grant) – this track (which was released as a single) is a reggae inspired ‘single girl’ anthem sampling ‘Warrior Charge’ by the legendary Aswad. Grammy award winning Reggae producer Don ‘Donstrumental’ Chandler gave it a dub remix last summer too.
The album proceeds to tell the stories of love, life, joy & heartbreak through a melange of groove – filled mid tempo tracks, powerful soulful ballads & uptempo bops with international collaborations, special guests and welcome surprises along the way all showcasing Louise’s vast vocal range and dulcet tones.
Guinness World Record winning Canadian rapper D.O Gibson guests on the mid- tempo bouncy track ‘I Give In Easy’ (produced by Ross O’ Reilly) and long-time friend 3rd Person features on the Neo Soul ‘break up’ track ‘Roll The Credits’, The British rapper was also on one of Golbey’s first breakout singles & Radio 1Xtra favourite ‘Same Old Same Old’.
Not all the songs are about tales of love though. ‘The Badebaba Song’ and ‘Don’t
Feel Good’ (with The Script’s Ben Sargeant on bass) reflect on the effects of the
pandemic and feeling powerless in unknown territory.
The album’s finale is a unique cover of Angie Stone’s Wish I Didn’t Miss You. Gol-
bey’s vocals really stand out on this powerful track, enhanced by the live piano skills of Linden Grant throughout the track.
