Def Sound blends the groove of future beats with creative rap flows, adds a touch of poetry with a subtle sense of humor.

Last month he dropped the carefree feel good track SATURDAZE, then followed 12TH AVE last week… As you can appreciate it, Def is developping a great storytelling around the songs that he wrote.

Nominated and subsequently winning a coveted spot as one of LA Weekly’s “Best New Artists to Watch 2017,” def.’s music has racked up close to 200K Spotify streams to-date.

His 2018 Grammy-considered track, “Propane,” was lauded by Miguel and Raphael Saadiq, and his single “(A)Gain” earned a spot on BBC Radio’s Year-Endlist.

def.sound’s new album COLORED, set for release Summer 2019, continues his exploration of identity and self-awareness.

Inspired by Zora Neale Hurston’s How It Feels to Be Colored Me and Terence Nance’s Random Acts of Flyness, def.’s COLORED is a sonic tapestry of triumph, levity, trauma, ancestry, and power.

Afro Latino (parents from Belize & Panama) born and based in South Central LA, def.sound (real name Emmanuel Ashley Ricketts) is a contemporary hip-hop artist, producer, published poet, and community activist. Inspired by the genres’ social justice roots, and the vibrant diversity of his community, def.’s work captures the sound of spiritual and political freedom.

With the recent release of his Texture, (G)radients, and Value episodes, def.’s music has received widespread critical acclaim.
