Julia Karr: What if your best friend is in love with you?

Julia Karr returns with her glistening new single Knots, available on all streaming platforms on September 19, 2022.

Inspired by her night-time musings untangling constellations of “what ifs”, the neon – coloured Knots offers the perfect balance of electronic-tinged soul/r&b, with the messiness of love reflected through twinkling choppy beats cascading over Julia Karr’s sultry vocals.

“I wrote this song while reminiscing about a friendship that had turned sour after my friend professed his romantic interest. I was so young at the time that I was petrified, and I didn’t want to lose this person who was my best friend back then. But sometimes I wonder how things could have turned out if I had my shit figured out and if I had taken a chance, Julia confides. I think I wrote the song partly to hype myself up, to encourage myself to be brave and try things, while at the same time acknowledging that part within me that is unsure, careful, doubtful. Emotions are so messy sometimes.”

Born in Germany to Polish immigrant parents, Julia Karr lets her multicultural upbringing and personal stories of emotional healing guide her music. A songwriter but also a producer, she playfully gives herself “license to explore, collecting samples and flipping them into little melodic instruments”, looking up to Amaarae and Burna Boy’s up tempo, pulsating tracks, as much as Mahalia’s more stripped down and lyrically driven productions. While her refreshing authenticity has already seduced many since her first release in early 2020 (even appearing on a few collaborations along the way), Julia Karr is now looking to further cement her unique sound with a debut EP to be released in spring 2023.
