DEVN Shares ‘WILD’ Video, Preps Deluxe ‘St. Luke St.’ EP
Charlotte, North Carolina’s R&B newcomer DEVN introduced his singular sound with the release of his debut EP St. Luke St. in July, 2021. Since then, the singer/songwriter, producer, and multi-instrumentalist stayed relatively quiet until the recent release of his latest single “WILD“. Today (8/15/2022), almost exactly one year since his guest feature on Dreamville rapper Lute‘s record “Myself“, DEVN shares the official Cinecerly-directed music video for his new single. Produced by Arnold Obonyo, “the song is about being wildly in love, and romantically obsessed with someone”, says DEVN. The video plays out over the track’s subdued instrumentals, complimented by tinted lighting, and capped by an unexpected twist.
“I wanted to capture that feeling on this record. I was inspired by patterns that I observed in relationships, whether that be my own or some else’s… We all experience that moment of obsession and I wanted to play with that idea. We must acknowledge the fact that relationships have highs and lows, and realize that the romantically obsessive parts are passing moments, and grow with our partners past that. The video depicts what happens when we don’t get past those unhealthy feelings.” – DEVN
“WILD” will serve as one of three new songs on the deluxe version of DEVN’s St. Luke St. EP, set to release September 9, 2022 via Soulspazm. Pre-order/save St. Luke St. (Deluxe) here.
The St. Luke St. EP is a masterwork of contemporary R&B and Trap Soul, infused with Afrobeats and Pop Rap. The project’s lyrics were freestyled, yet inspired by general ideas and real life experiences during DEVN’s formative years, which he has extensively journaled about over the years.
Born Devin Christopher Mitchell, singer, rapper, producer and multi-instrumentalist DEVN seamlessly blends contemporary R&B, Pop Rap, and Trap Soul. His Charlotte, North Carolina roots have had a profound impact on his music career to date. Starting in the church choir where he learned to play piano, DEVN eventually got the opportunity to record music in a neighbor’s garage. He soon went on to Charlotte’s New Life Arts Middle School where he was mentored by Hall of Fame Gospel singer and pastor John P Kee. With his proven talent and growing track record, DEVN earned his way into the prestigious Northwest School of The Arts for high school.
Now, with years of recording and life experience, DEVN is poised to make his long-awaited debut with his self-engineered EP, due out summer of 2021. The project is a rumination about love and romantic experiences during his formative years. While none of the song lyrics were actually written, DEVN has been journaling to record his feelings and life experiences over the years, which he relied heavily on for inspiration during the recording process for the EP (similar to the non-writing style of some of Hip-Hop greats like B.I.G. and Jay-Z). While his sound might be a hodgepodge of auto-tune forefathers like T-Pain, melodic rappers like Juice WRLD, newer R&B luminaries like dvsn, and Pop icons like The Weeknd, DEVN’s identity as an artist is largely inspired by the rawness and authenticity of ’60s and ‘70s Soul music and early 2000s era Neo-Soul.
